About NJASC
The New Jersey Association of Student Councils (NJASC) was founded at New Brunswick High School as the "New Jersey Association of High School Councils" (NJAHSC) in 1927. Freda Marden, who was the Student Council advisor of New Brunswick High School at that time, served as the first Executive Secretary (Director) of the organization until her retirement in 1963. In over eighty years of existence, there are only ten other individuals that have had this role - providing essential adviser continuity.
In 1976, the name of our organization was changed from NJAHSC to NJASC to reflect the increasing role of junior high and middle schools. Since its inception, the NJASC has continually evolved and constantly been at the forefront of student leadership and student issues. Dedicated to helping middle and high school student councils to be more active and engaged in their schools and communities, throughout the school year NJASC works with both student leaders and student council advisors to encourage participation in student government and provide a forum for students to network and share ideas for successful projects and events. CLICK HERE to view a comprehensive history of the NJASC from its' inception in 1927 to today.
Each summer the NJASC sponsors a Leadership Training Conference, a four day retreat where students learn critical leadership skills including communication and public speaking, problem solving, respecting diversity, project planning, and managing conflict. Each January, over 1500 student leaders and advisers from middle and high schools throughout the state come together at the annual NJASC Convention. Students elect their statewide representatives to the NJASC Executive Board, and attend a variety of student-led workshops on such topics as planning successful charity events and creative ways to boost school spirit. Each May, nearly 5000 student leaders and advisers attend the annual Spring Awards Program at Six Flags Great Adventure. Awards are given to recognize outstanding school service and support of the annual State Charity, which is announced for the coming year at this event. Each October, over 1500 student leaders and advisers attend the Fall Business Meeting at which interested potential candidates for State Office begin the process toward possibly being elected to the next Executive Board.
NJASC also sponsors the following award programs for its' schools, student leaders, and advisers to support and recognize their efforts in support of student leadership:
- Administrator of the Year (October)
- Middle Level Advisor of the Year (October)
- High School Advisor of the Year (October)
