2011 REGION 2 CONFERENCE
"LAKESIDE LEADERSHIP"

On the weekend of April 8-10, 2011 over 70 student leaders and advisers from throughout Region 2 gathered in Canandaigua, New York for a weekend of "Lakeside Leadership". At this conference, student leaders from Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania presented workshops and roundtables to train their fellow leaders while sharing with them great things they, their schools, and their states are doing.
NASC Advisory Council adult co-chair Lou Miller (NJ) and Region 2 Student Liaison Sarah Rudasill (PA) chaired this conference, at which the students and advisors explored "Taking the Next Step" after having defined our mission statement one year earlier in Ocean City. On Saturdat morning participants were divided into six groups, exploring the concept, logistics, and potential benefits of forming a "Northeastern Association of Student Councils". On Sunday morning, they were mixed up into different groups to share and reflect upon their ideas before reconvening with their original group to revisit what they discussed the day before. Both of these sessions were extremely productive, and "the next step" may be taken as early as 2012.
Meanwhile, each state presented one leadership training seminar or workshop to all in attendance. On Saturday afternoon, the New York State National Guard provided several team building activities for the student leaders on the lawns of Bristol Harbour Resort, overlooking scenic Canandaigua Lake. On Saturday evening, everyone particpated in roundtable sessions in which 11 of their fellow student leaders shared great ideas and programs from their schools and states. Finally, everyone had a great time with pizza and bowling as the student leaders and advisors of Region 2 continued to get to know each other better.
